The State of Michigan has settled with the residents affected by the Flint Water Crisis for $600 million.
This statement was released by Libertarian Vice-Presidential candidate Spike Cohen
The city of Flint failed to properly ensure the safety of their water distribution system, allowing lead to enter the water supply and expose over 100,000 residents to extremely elevated levels.
Up to 12,000 children were exposed to this harmful neurotoxin. At least 12 people have also died from Legionnaires' disease, and an estimated several hundred additional pregnancies ended in stillbirths.
It was a complete failure of the system and the people of Flint have had to pay the price.
Today is a landmark victory for the people of Flint. However, it’s important to note that every single one of those dollars won will be funded by the people of Michigan instead of the officials and bureaucrats that were responsible in the first place.
To this day, the responsible officials have yet to be held accountable. These officials knowingly ignored or covered up the crisis.
I hope this is just the beginning for the people of Flint. For too long, the state has failed it's citizens and offered them little to make up for the damage caused. We need to see accountability for those responsible and significant support for those impacted and will continue to be impacted for the rest of their lives.
Come see me speak about this injustice today at the Water Treatment Facility in Flint, Michigan at 5:30pm
